Since the demise of Bang Bang Club a short while back, I’ve been holding my breath waiting to see who or what would try to fill the monster’s shoes. Cape Town this weekend sees the rise of a new venue for the Mother City party enthusiasts to get their groove on, and it’s fêted to be a little more sophisticated and grown-up than your average club; certainly, there’ll be fewer kids at the door than were queuing up for Bang Bang’s predictable energy. Friday and Saturday night are the official launch parties of Club Voom Voom, with Ralf Droesemeyer and the Mo’Horizons, a Latin jazz and funk outfit from Hannover, Germany, scheduled to inject the dance floor with their sultry genre-bending international sound.
Club owner Fred Jacquier (aka Fred Spider) has been in the business for over a quarter of a century; he was resident DJ and artistic director at Club La Marquise in Lyon for eight years, establishing it as one of France’s top clubs. He’s also been involved with Diobar, Café Royale, and Marula Café in Barcelona. With his distinctly European sensibility, Fred is promising a more mature and varied level of entertainment than the average Cape Town nightclub—a strong jazz influence, backed up by countless appearances around the globe, from the Montreux Jazz Festival to Cargo in London, and most places in between. Expect tasteful French café-inspired décor and a line-up of artists and DJs that should be a creative counterpoint to clubland’s inherent obsession with furious electro and commercial houses remixes.
Also on the bill for this weekend is South African singer-songerwriter-radio DJ-actress Lu Chase (who fronts the band, Iridium Project); she’ll be collaborating with Infrared, another notable musician and DJ. And warming up the house for the Mo’Horizons is local hip-hop jazz band, Hayden Gardner and The Hot Shots.
Club Voom Voom (www.clubvoomvoom.com) occupies Bang Bang’s old premises at 70 Loop Street; the opening weekend parties kick off at 9pm.
