Womb, 2-16 Maruyama-cho
Hidden among the love hotels that line the back lanes of Shibuya is a subterranean mecca for all things house and techno-related: Womb. Vast doors of steel mark its discrete entrance, while inside there are concrete floors, lines of lockers and efficient khaki-clad staff armed with walkie-talkies – paving the way to four floors of music. The main action takes place beneath a giant mirrored ball (Asia’s biggest apparently) on the central dance floor: expect a lightshow extraordinaire as the temperature rises throughout the night. Those seeking a breather should head one floor up overlooking the dance floor where there is a juice bar serving seasonal refreshers such as freshly squeezed watermelon. The top floor is a more intimate red velvet and chandelier space complete with separate DJ and VIP room – which may be familiar from the film Babel – while the basement room offers food until the early hours.
