There’s nothing quite like settling down in front of a roaring open fire, whisky in-hand, during these cold winter nights. And it’s even better when said whisky comes from The Dalmore, a famous distillery in Alness, Scotland. Heading up the distillery is master blender Richard Paterson, who has arguably one of the best jobs in Britain by making sure that every bottle tastes just right. It’s a miracle he gets any work done! As lovers of the golden stuff, Hg2 caught up with Richard to ask him a few questions.
Are you a hedonist? Of course! I sincerely hope that all my whiskies give genuine pleasure to everyone.
What’s your profession? A whisky master blender.
What defines good whisky for you? A perfect balance of great wood and the spirit itself.
If you were a city, which one would you be and why? My own city, Glasgow. It has many great historical roots – it’s vibrant, exciting and the people are the kindest, most hospitable in the world. I like to think it reflects my personality.
Favourite city to live in? Glasgow.
Favourite city to holiday in? Stockholm.
Favourite food? Rack of lamb.
Favourite Drink? Scotch whisky.

What’s next for you? Creating more rare award-winning single malt expressions, and hopefully testing and recreating Shackleton’s Whisky.
