A Taxing Situation / NEWS HUNGRY

As if January wasn’t depressing enough, last week’s news of a 2.5% rise in VAT would have even the chirpiest chap sticking his head in the gas oven. Thank God, then, for celebrity chef Aldo Zilli, who will be saying no to VAT at his restaurants for a week at the beginning of this month. Hurrah! After that period, discerning diners will be able to enjoy a VAT tax break every Monday in January and from February onwards VAT will remain at 17.5%. Zilli says of the VAT freeze; “In the last few years customers have had a really tough ride. This new rise in VAT is going to see them get hit again. So at my Soho restaurants, Zilli Fish and Zilli Green, from 7th to 14th January, we’ve decided to not charge any VAT to our diners and from then on we will absorb the cost of the 2.5% tax increase ourselves so that people aren’t put out of pocket and can still enjoy a few pleasures in life like going out for a nice meal.” Other restaurants to have frozen tax include Shoreditch eatery The Drunken Monkey, Soho Indian The Red Fort and Notting Hill pub and dining room, The Chesterfield. We love it when a good plan comes together!
