Orient Express / Hg2 MUST-DRINK

Hedonists love to experiment, which is why we’ve fallen head over designer heels in love with the Experimental Cocktail Club in Chinatown. Found at 13A Gerrard Street, the recently-opened bar is a stylish speakeasy of sorts spread over two floors; the best bit, however, is that the restored Georgian townhouse still retains the 3.30am liquor license obtained from its previous occupants, meaning late-night Soho drinking no longer has to involve descending the steps of a dirty drug den. It’s class all the way here, with exposed red brickwork, lived-in wooden floors and sumptuous fabrics that draw on inspiration from the Orient (fitting, given its location). The cocktails are as cool as you’d expect – they’d have to be at £11 a pop – and are served up by charismatic bartenders who know their stuff; a particular favourite is the Opium Express, a heady mixture made from Ketel goji liqueur syrup, dragon fruit(!), lemon juice and poppy seeds (hence the ‘opium’). The trio behind this little number owns three more bars in Paris, and their knack for creating gorgeous watering holes hasn’t faltered; if it’s decadent drinking you’re after, you’ve come to the right place.
