Circus Freaks / Hg2 GO NOW

Ladies and Gentlemen of luxurious lifestyles and exquisite excesses, roll up, roll up for a night at the circus! Once again, the domed, giant jelly-mould that is London’s Royal Albert Hall has been transformed into an opulent big tops, a perfect venue to showcase the legendary Cirque du Soleil, which is once again in town. As ever, its new show, Totem, is an extravaganza of slick circus acts and vibrant costumes, set against a visually stunning backdrop of light and colour. Totem traces the journey of the human species from primordial gloop to its desire to fly, with the characters evolving on the back of a giant turtle. However, the narrative theme has met with a somewhat mixed reception: only time will tell whether it was a good idea to blend death-defying acrobatics and juggling unicyclists with a bearded, ball-juggling old chap (Charlie Darwin, naturally), a band of musical scientists fiddling with their test-tubes and a surfeit of primate costumes. In short, the jury’s still out on the show’s French-Canadian director Robert Lepage: intelligent ape or mad monkey?
