Down At The Bottom Of The Garden / Hg2 MUST-EAT

From time to time, even the most decadent and urbanite of London hedonists need a shot of bucolic tranquility and a plate of top-notch grub to soothe the soul: little might they realise that it’s only a hop, skip and a district-line tube ride to Richmond away, down at Petersham Nurseries. Words cannot describe the beauty that awaits you in this secret garden of green and pleasant delights, whether you are browsing the plant selection, having a coffee and cake in the greenhouse with its ramshackle chairs (Hg2 recommends the hot chocolate, which comes in its own little porcelain jug), or settling down for a full meal (in a setting that is only slightly more formal; the floor underfoot is crumbly earth and the exquisite almost-garden furniture is beautifully mismatched). Even better, head chef Skye Gyngell (who might be familiar from her column in the Independent) has just won a Michelin star for her efforts: a breath of fresh country air that contrasts with some of the more formal (might we say, stuffy?) institutions blessed with that honour. The pictures say it all: only he without a soul, she without a single artistic fibre in her being, would pass up the opportunity to while away the hours at Petersham Nurseries.
