A stone’s throw from Hg2 HQ at 115 Westbourne Grove, it was a no-brainer when asked to review El Pirata Detapas. As the younger, trendier sibling to its older, more sensible sister over in Mayfair (simply called, El Pirata), first impressions were good. The space, split over two floors, was simple but stylish with dark mahogany tables offset by bottle-lined walls and designer lampshades. The menu – headed up by Omar Allibhoy, who boasts Maze and El Bulli on his CV –  is traditional Spanish tapas with a contemporary twist. We opted for the Chef’s Menu, which included (amongst other things) endives served with Valdeón cheese foam, octopus carpaccio, and pork’s cheeks, red carrot purée and red wine shallots. Those who think that sharing plates doth not maketh a meal, be warned; this is diet-defying, belt-busting stuff at its heartiest, and even those with pits for stomachs won’t leave hungry. Everything was washed down with a rather lovely (and light) red from Jerez, the perfect end to the perfect taste of Spain. Even if the drizzly weather outside isn’t quite as perfect.
