Like A Shiny New Penny / Hg2 MUST-EAT

You can travel all over the world in search of exciting cuisines to tantalise your taste buds, but sometimes you can’t beat the familiar taste of home. And now there’s even less reason to leave London for gorgeous gourmet grub (though we do still suggest you pick up one of our guides and check out other cities), with The Penny Black having opened its doors at 212 Fulham Road. The man heading up the menu is head chef Jan Chanter, with comfort food classics such as Beef Wellington, cottage piece, braised oxtail and traditional Sunday roast made from the finest forerib of Longhorn Beef. Subtle but nonetheless stylish interiors provide the perfect backdrop, with reds, greys and blacks accentuated by works from renowned pop artist Simon Claridge (best known for his diamond-dust portraits of Kate Moss and Sid Vicious, amongst others). And with everything wrapped up with a highly eclectic wine menu, we couldn’t think of anywhere better to spend a languid lunch with those we love (or, incidentally, those we’ve just met).
