A visit to Cachao demands a little shopping preparation: a night at this bar—however well-intentioned at the beginning—will not be complete without a miraculous pair of shoes to look fabulous and comfortably keep pace with the fast-timed salsa. Though truth be told, unless you have Latin blood in your veins you’ll be outshone from all sides. If you arrive at this mojito haven by around ten o’clock, then no dance floor will be visible. Old-fashioned sewing machines serve as tables and fill any area not occupied by brown leather bar stools. And yet as a group of heavily-moustachio’ed men draw their instruments, drinks and seats are abandoned and, barely three chords into the song a crowd transpires. It may seem as though there’s hardly enough room to walk across the floor, but the Colombians use their hips to carve out a space. Arms flail and hips swivel in what is surely the best salsa bar in Bogota. Maroon leather chairs provide a resting area on the patio outside, but it wont be long until you’re dragged back for just one more song.
