Queen Of The Night / Hg2 MUST-DRINK

Despite what rumours would have you believe, McQueen – a bar, club and restaurant – is not inspired by the late fashion designer Alexander McQueen. Nor was it opened by Kate Moss. In fact, the Shoreditch venue – found on Tabernacle Street – is a hedonistic homage to Steve McQueen, screen legend and all-round sex symbol. Set in the former site of The Tabernacle, the interiors are divided up into three clean areas; the bar on the first level, all exposed brick, dark mahogany and chocolate-coloured sofas; the restaurant to the side, much the same but with mirrorballs and gilt-framed paintings of ol’ Stevey boy himself; and the club downstairs, decked out with reflective wall panels, padded leather walls and dark, moody lighting. There’s a stage area, of course, for live acts (this is, after all, the East End) and booths for those looking to get up to no good away from prying eyes. Refreshingly, the music policy is decidedly retro – Elvis, The Beatles, Blondie – and the crowd is painfully cool, with a mix of Shoreditch scruffies and groomed West Enders coming together for one night only. McQueen, we salute you.
