Why So Blue? / REVIEW PREVIEW

MannaBay Fine Boutique Hotel, 1 Denholm Road, Oranjezicht, City Bowl
An architectural oddity in a soothing shade of blue, this classy little guesthouse looks so innocent from its perch overlooking the city. Step within, though, and you’re in an emporium of near-operatic design, surrounded by glitzy chandeliers, Persian rugs, knock-off classical statuary, and a tantalising collection of local artworks. Sounding tame? Then look out for the disco ball and the fluffy stools that look like miniature Ewoks—and a gigantic photograph of Cape Town that covers one wall behind the booze cabinet. It’s intimate and feels very personal, yet the opulence of the décor (and the charisma of the staff) transports you into decadent holiday mode. By day, you can lounge by the pool with Table Mountain staring down at you. At sunset, as you survey the city in all her lit-up glory, you’ll be plied with drinks and snacks and exacting advice on where to head for a riveting night on the town. Or you could give in to the temptation to stay in. Sumptuous lounges, a generously stocked library and a wine cellar (where private fine-dining can be arranged) are yours to explore and inhabit; and there’s ongoing help-yourself bar service should one of the butlers be momentarily out of earshot. The real challenge will be selecting a room from amongst seven equally gorgeous and cosseting spaces. They’re priced—extremely fairly—according to size, position and view, but each one is visually unique, with one-off wallpapers, clever colour schemes and a bit of a theme, extending to the theatrical cerise, blue and silver drama of Versailles, the suite with heady fleur-de-lis inflections. We’re mad for the Black & White Room (below) with its modern monochromatic fabrics and trippy psychaedelic wallpaper, and also love the safari hues of the Explorer Room, with its war chests and padded headboards posing as Portuguese padrões. Whatever it takes to unwind, you’ll find it here, along with spoil-you-rotten service.
