Depeche Mode, LCD Soundsystem, Air, Booka Shade and even Kylie Minogue and Robbie Williams have handed over their sounds to this in-demand remixer. But Kris Menace (or Christophe Hoeffel as we’re sure his parents still call him) has his own styles too. Acclaimed releases like Discopolis (2005’s Ibiza Anthem) or side projects like Black Van catapulted him into the limelight, attracting signings with some of the most influential electronic music labels going.
The latest in this respected producers furor is his own imprint, Compuphonic. Releases so far have included the Idiosyncrasies album and 12” cuts like Voyager, Streamroller, Stereophonic (one of the hottest records of 2008 for DMC) and Jupiter, which has seen support flooding in from some of the biggest DJs in the world – Annie Mac, Pete Tong, Soulwax, Boys Noize and David Guetta included.
Falling Star – his precursor track for one of the most hotly tipped house albums of 2012, Electric Horizon – drops next month (March 12).
“I wanted to create a space odyssey, opening your mind and taking you far away into another world,” he says. Menace also roped in legendary London based visual DJ dons, Hexstatic, to put together a live visual video for a truly out of the world experience.
Here he gives us his Sounds of the City, featuring the music in Berlin that’s not only hot but also fundamental to the city right now.
And where to catch the sounds he likes:
Warm up bars:
Wasserwerk – Amazing location in an old water supply works. It’s great for having a romantic dinner in an outstanding location and to start the evening with a cocktail afterwards.
Tausend – One of the best high-end nightspots with a great space-age decor inside.
Watergate – It’s one of the best electronic clubs in Berlin and in the morning you can see the sun go up… magical!
Berghain – The most famous club in Berlin and voted as one of best in the world.
Prinzenstrasse 85F – A very nice hangout club – very simple, very easy going.
Tiergarten – in the summer, after a long night you go this big park in the middle of Berlin where you will find a nice place of your choice to chill the fuck out with some sausages from a nearby patrol station.
